There are a number of policies that we abide by at JMJ Sporthorses. These policies are intended to protect the buyer, seller, and the horse. While we try to be as accommodating as possible, we stick to these policies to ensure equity and efficiency.

Sales Policies

  • First come, first serve basis- All horses are sold to the first buyer that presents payment. The only circumstances under which a horse will be held for a buyer is if a prepurchase exam is scheduled within a 10 day window. At that point, we will hold the horse until the exam is completed. Otherwise, horses will not be held for buyers.

  • Farm visits encouraged- We encourage all prospective buyers to come sit on the horse of interest before purchasing. This experience helps inform everyone if the rider and the horse are a suitable match. We do sell horses sight unseen. This requires a lot of communication between us, the buyer, and the buyer's trainer. But it can be done successfully! We have many testimonials to suggest that in many instances this works.  However, if the buyer is local, we strongly encourage them to come see the horse in person prior to purchase.

  • PPEs welcomed- We welcome all buyers to perform a prepurchase exam on the prospect that they are considering for purchase. There are many major vet hospitals in Lexington that have same-week availability to perform PPEs. If you have never prepurchased a horse before, here are two helpful articles on the pros and cons of PPEs.

  • Contracts-  All horses are sold with a contract that stipulates 4 primary things. 1) The horse is being bought in as-is conditions with no express warranties. 2) A first right of refusal for JMJ Sporthorses should the horse ever be sold in the future. 3) A no-slaughter, no-racing guarantee. 4) Bi-annual updates from the buyer to JMJ Sporthorses.
  • Full disclosure- One of the main things that makes our program successful is the relationships we have with the retiring horse's racing connections. We use these relationships to learn everything we can about the horse. We then pass on everything we know about the horse to you, so that you can make an informed decision. Often times, these horses are not blemish free. However, there are many injuries that if rehabbed correctly are entirely compatible with a sport career. There are many blemishes that will never be performance limiting. We are very selective on the front end and only take on horses we believe to be sound. We try not to represent horses that we do not 100% believe can thrive in a sport career.

  • Trials- Trials will not be considered in most circumstances. However, in some rare instances, if the horse is in a higher price range (greater than $8,000), we may consider trials to approved programs with active communication with the trainer (if the buyer is an amateur or a junior). If a trial is approved, we require that the prospective buyers take out a mortality policy on the horse to protect all parties involved. Trials will not extend beyond 5 days. There is a non-refundable deposit required (10% of the purchase price). PPEs are to be completed during the trial period. All horses must stay on our feed and turnout program while on trial.

  • Payment- JMJ Sporthorses will accept ACH bank transfers, Paypal, and Venmo. Personal checks are accepted but must clear the bank before the horse leaves the property.

  • Boomerang Horses- If it becomes apparent after a sale that a horse is not going to work for the client, we will accept that horse back into our program within a 2 month window from the time of the sale (barring any major soundness or behavioral concerns that arise during that window). We will not issue a refund, but we will provide the horse a safe landing place so that a buyer never feels "stuck" and makes a poor decision as a result.
